The sky lounge is located in the taller building, on the top floor. I designed the sky lounge to have a bar, indoor eating and lounge area, outdoor eating and lounge area, dance area, and a kitchen. The wall for the indoor and outdoor spaces is glass, allowing the openness between the two spaces. The lighting in the space is dimmed.

The office spaces are located in the taller building, in the middle floors. They are open office spaces. There is personal desks, group tables and meeting areas located in the space. Also, a wall dedicated completely of shelving for books. There is two conference rooms, two principal/management personal offices, and a break area. The lighting in the space is bright, enhancing each work area and group area.

The retail spaces are located in the shorter building, on the second floor. There is areas for resting and sitting. The store fronts are all designed to fit each store personally. The lighting in here is bright and enhances the store products and displays.

In the male and female activity rooms I wanted them to be similar, but just change materials and colors. The space has been divided in two using a partition wall. The wall is transparent, to allow the staff to see what is happening on both sides of the room. One side is for eating with tables provided. The other is a space for conversation to happen and watching television. The reception desk has been changed by having shorter sections giving it a more open feeling allowing patients to feel more comfortable. There is also color changes on the carpet.

The adolescent group room provides a space for smaller groups of people to hang out or play a board game. There is also a Wii game system in this room, so I wanted to have an open area in front of the television so they will have plenty of space to move around and play the games.

The room for family visiting has a booth setting to provide a space where parents can bring food and have a meal with their child. Then there are chairs and a couch for when it is not meal time and they can talk and sit with their child.

The children's activity room is also divided in two with a partition wall. The height of the bottom frame has changed, being shorter to adapt to the heights of the children. The left side has large circular foam seats that allows the kids to sit and read a book, watch television, or to hang out with other children. There are tables and chairs on the other side for eating, the furniture is child size to better relate to the children.

The patient rooms have a storage and shelving unit built in that extends from floor to ceiling. There is an opening allowing the children and adolescents to sit inside and read a book or relax. On the front there is a plastic frame for children to slide pictures and artwork they have made to personalize their room. On the wall there is a 3D graphic. It is two inches thick to have a textural and level change.
The hallways have graphics on the wall so that it helps the patients find their room easier. I have not fully developed the idea for the hallways, but this will happen in phase two.

Your images are good, really paying attention to detail. I think the colors you chose have related to the forest and is a natural feel. Maybe look at the column in the middle and make sure that they can't easily climb on. The graphics of the detailed forest is good to show to better understand the levels of the forest. Im not exactly sure what is being shown by the other diagram, is that the outside or is that one of the PCUs? With the image above, the ceiling change is good, it stimulates the brain and eyes but isn't over stimulating. The lights on the ceiling work well with the space. In the patient rooms I'm not sure what is going on there are, you having it a neutral color to allow the patients to add there own personality? What materials are you using, it looks like maybe you were thinking about wood? The ceiling change in here is good as well they both work together to cohesive but still different to distinguish the different rooms. Is that shelving in the back wall of that it looks like stair shelves, or maybe a night stand. In the kids activity room, the room divider works well for the height of the children. What activities would they be doing in there? Make sure they can't climb on top of the s-curve divider and jump or hurt themselves. The designs look good!

What you have stated on your blog shows you have really looked at the space and pointed out the things you want to change and make it a more "happy place". I think the concept chosen works well for the clients. They are really missing out on the child exploration experience. Kids really do learn from there own experiences in exploration. Having different activities and spaces for kids to explore will make there minds think and gain knowledge. The points you have listed to change are all good ideas and will help the aesthetics of the space. Good to have interviewed someone to get different ideas to improve the space from the same age as the clients. Maybe just adding a few sketches will help to show ideas better as to what you were thinking of doing.

Conceptual Exploration

My concept is GROWTH. The patient's GROWTH will be determined by the knowledge they gain at Central Regional Hospital. The physical activities they do will help them to GROW strong and healthy bodies. The learning activities they do in the school classes will help them to GROW smart brains. The materials, textures, lighting, furniture, and design details will be carefully chosen to show GROWTH.

The design of the space will be influenced by GROWTH. For the group rooms I wanted to have a partition wall that was still transparent and open so that the small spaces don't get any smaller and feel claustrophobic. I found some furniture that will show GROWTH vertically by widening out at the top. I want to have activities for the children and adolescent to GROW physically healthy and knowledgable. I brain stormed about how to change to reception desk to be more welcoming and inviting for the patients to be able to talk to the staff comfortably. I looked at transparent materials, one being open at the bottom, and then also just height changes.

I first started my designing by thinking of things that come in ten parts or pieces. So from that I wanted to design something that had ten pieces. My shape that I came up with to repeat is the Roman numeral ten, X. I designed ten X’s to be all connected to show the continuous movement which was shown by the time in the video and the continuous change. The largest X measures ten inches and from that they decrease in size by ten percent. In the video they started at one center point and keep that center point the whole time, so my design also has one center point. The way my project is view it can either be like you are zooming out or zooming in.

The Powers of Ten video by Charles and Ray Eames helped me to see and think about many different aspects of how I can improve my way of designing. It showed me that I need to not only think about the space or product I design, but I should also look at what might be surrounding the space or where and how the product would be used. I think that if I design by what its surroundings are then it will help tie everything together. The video was also about scale and how the scale of things can be hard to understand, so this video helped to see how large and small thing can be but that they are still connected. If we understand the scale of things better then it allows us to be better designers. Also, I think that by designing things with certain numbers, based on what is being designed, it will only be a better space or product. When I was researching about the powers of ten I just read a title saying “The Beauty of Repetition…” and it showed images that had repetition in the design. This is an example to say that repeating the same number, and in this case the number ten, enhances our design. Now when I design I will look at everything that is in the space and how it will relate to its surroundings and by repeating numbers.

Technology is rapidly improving every day. We have went from handwriting and mail being delivered in person to now being able to talk on phones, texting, email, and video chat. When all we used to have was hand drafting it would take longer and although it is still important to know how to hand draft in case of a situation where you need to quickly share an idea or better explain something visually, the use of computer-aided design programs have greatly improved how we compute today. Computing has been around since Stonehenge in 2750-1500 BC and The Great Wall of China in 300 BC. Today we are now able to communicate with people and share projects with others through computers and without having to be on the same computer or in the same room. This is known as cyberspace which is a term coined by William Gibson to denote the information space created by the Internet.

All of these rooms make me happy! They are all very orange which I love, they all have a unique characteristic about them. I like the tree on the wall and the white and black colors with the orange. I like the next room because it reminds me of my own room because my bedroom walls are orange, curtains are orange, and by comforter is orange as well. The next image I like because it has many textures in the space, whether it is orange or not.

In the fourth image they used the same light as in the third image. I think the fourth image could be improved by added more color in the space, addressing the windows, and changing the textures on the bed. I like the fifth image, but I think the space isn't laid out in a more efficient way, it looks like the bathroom counter is on one side and the bathtub is in the open on the other side of the room. I would also carry out the wood into the rest of the bedroom space.

Carlos Smith

Carlos is very imaginative when he designs a space. He thinks about the user and the needs they might have, he makes a story-line to go along with the perspective and thinks about the details. When he draws a perspective he has a distinct style of how he draws and renders. His lines are sketchy, and often the scale figures are animal heads on human bodies. He shows the scale figures interacting in the space and how the space would be used. I can also tell it's a "Carlos perspective" by the way he renders. He mostly uses watercolors and markers. He is very good at showing light and shadow.

My two clients are Grant Jones and Jamel Clark. Grant is 23 years old, undergraduate at UNCG who is studying English. He needs a quiet space when doing homework. He doesn't cook and eats out for most meals. He also hosts a poker night with his roommate every Tuesday and Thursday. Jamel is 21 years old, undergraduate at UNCG who is studying computer science. He is the captain of the lacrosse team, needs a place to store his equipment. Enjoys having friends over to watch sports and play video games. Eats most meals out or on campus.

Physical:

Quiet space for doing homework.
Poker area when they host poker night.
Place for Jamel to store his sports equipment.
Entertainment area for watching sports and playing video games.
Small kitchen with just the basics, neither one cooks so they just need a refrigerator and microwave, and a place to eat.

As a designer, I have many strengths. I have wanted to be a designer since I was in middle school and drew out floor plans with my cousin; since then I have only improved my work. I have learned to hand render well to show light and shadow and to imitate the material being used. I have a good grasp on perspectives and drawing how you would see something. When I start a design I look for inspiration and precedents of how I was the feel to be or what it might look like. I design things for the user and the needs and wants they have for the space. My personality has an effect of me being a designer as well, I am a perfectionist with most things so I like for my work to look right since it is representing me. I am also organized. I also manage time well by getting the work done ahead of time in case I need to go back to fix something at the end.

The butterfly, which I used in the phase two for my concept, is more delicate, colorful, and beautiful. Since I am designing an apartment for two college age guys I am going to develop the concept of a cocoon, it is protective and a period of developing. The shape of a cocoon is organic and curved. Since it is see through I thought of using light block or a material that is translucent in the space.

I'm taking inspiration from sports bars. Materials used most in them are dark woods and leather. They also use dark colors, burgundy, navy, and hunter green. Also since some have a darker feel to them, there are lots of lights used through out the space to lighten it up. Since Grant and Jamel don't cook, the kitchen won't get much use, so just the basics is all I will design for. Open shelving will be used and maybe even glass shelving. For the area where they can watch sports and play video games, I wanted to do theatre seating so they can have about eight people over and also the poker table will seat for eight people.

Today we presented phase two of our Unity Village project. Everyone worked really hard and today it showed in the presentations!!

PART 1:

For Neighborhood B on the ground floor I feel David and Ino did a good job. There colors and materials were a good choice, it gave off a cozy feeling for when the residents enter into the building on that floor. The community garden was a good idea since residents don't have their own yard to maintain, it gives them a place to work and have a hobby as well as meet new people. I think to improve the space it could have softer textures used throughout the space. The presentation was laid out nice; I would just say to add a few more scale figures into the perspectives to show how the users would interact in the space and with each other.

For the first floor, Kelsey, Charese, and Kalani, they did a good job with their concept. I feel that mixing the old with new worked well to relate to the residents in the space. The way they approached the design was good, by taking old items and working with the scale of making them larger. I liked the materials used in the caf, the textiles on the furniture worked well in the room. And I like the ceiling light tiles. The perspectives did a nice job of showing the spaces. The only concern I have was that I don’t feel like this floor connected with the other two floors as well as it could have. I think the materials were darker then the other two floor having light airy colors.

For the second floor, Jeff and Felicia did a good job showing their concept in the space. In the presentation they talked about their concept being flowing and moving, and I definitely saw that in the floor plan by the walls being curved. The perspectives were rendered nicely, they worked well together even by having two different people rendering them. In the gym area for the track, I don’t really know how well that works, I know in our design ideas we had planned to have a track, but the space was too small to have one, and I felt like in theirs that the 90 degree angles would be a harsh turn for the knees and short straight-aways aren’t as ideal as they need to be, unless maybe it’s just used for walking. I liked how they showed the inspiration image on each slide, it really helped to show where their ideas came from and where they drew inspiration.

PART 2:

I think our team did a good job in showing the perspectives and really show how the space would be used. I think our ideas were consistent through out the whole floor by using the organic and curved walls and lines and also having some of the same materials used through out the floor. I think that areas that could be improved were on our slides there were a little darker then what we actually planned, so maybe adding more light fixtures. We thought about the users in the space, but maybe relating it more to all the groups instead of one specific group of users. I think as a team our design process was good, but because we split up the rooms, due to time constraints our ideas through out the rooms were disconnected. So next time taking the time to get ideas and how we will connect each room together. We did lay out the floor to have the library and worship areas on one end of the hall since they were more quiet spaces and have the gym and medical clinic on the other end where they would be more noisy.

A concept is always a process. Although our original concept statement worked around the essence of a butterfly, we began to take inspiration from the butterfly to further our design. We worked with the forms of nature and organic shapes. We designed the spaces to give off the feeling of embracive and fluidity. These two words played a huge part in our decisions and help explain our design.

In the design of the second floor, our design addresses a place for the mind, body, and soul. In a situation with a 72 year old man in a wheelchair, there is a medical clinic for him to go get a checkup or if he is just not feeling well.

A 6 year old girl would have fun in the child area of the library where she could pick out a children's book and climb into the reading pod.

A 42 year old mother who works in the building can go to the worship space on her break or when she gets off work to have some time to herself to worship or meditate how she pleases.

- Design Concept is a general idea or understanding especially one derived from specific instances or occurrences.

- The first attribute requires that the concept states something about the design solution and not the design problem. The second attribute of good design concept statements is selectivity. The third attribute of good design concept statement is economy.

- Other ways of approaching design concept statements include the use of statements that try to paint a picture of the experience you can expect in, say a restaurant and statements that evoke a certain spirit, be it of a past era or a certain attribute, such as elegance, austerity, or intimacy.

- The scheme you develop from your concept must represent an appropriate response to the project type, its particular programmatic requirements, and the context in which it occurs.

- Articulation refers to the modification of planes or volumes by their skillful modulation into clearly expressed subparts to facilitate legibility, add interest, and afford order a greater degree of complexity.

The essence of this design is based around the shapes, colors, development and interaction with environment of a butterfly.

This relates to the residence because they are of all ages and from different places, just as butterflies have a distinct life progression and are seen throughout the world. Also, within this space we hope to develop a since of interaction with the environment. Butterflies play a key part in the environment by pollinating plants. This space will consist of organic shapes and forms from nature that embrace the residences. Overall, the inspiration from this design has evolved from a butterfly.

My Sisters House

Today was the grand opening of My Sisters House. It is a house that IARC students who took Urban Studio got to build. It was built for teenage girls who are in a crisis pregnancy to live in the house together. This is a great way to have community between the girls who are going through the same thing. The house is very unique and and built nicely, but I don't think it fits in well with the surrounding houses. The inside looks great and I especially like the design of the cabinets. I wasn't a big fan of the green walls although I liked the thought of having the certain walls painted different then just white. I don't know how safe the concrete floors will be for the children who will be living there. They're kids so most likely they will crawl, walk or even run and might trip and fall and concrete floors isn't the safest material. I would be buying lots of carpets to cover the floors. My favorite design of the house was the rectangular window. The windows were a variety of different size rectangles and they were also oriented vertical and horizontal.

It was a very neat project that they worked on and I'm sure lots of hard work went into the house and I wish I would have had the opportunity to be a part of the project. And I hope there will be another Urban Studio that I can be a part of before I finish school.

MakeShift Shelter

For this project, I feel like my team worked great together. We all got along and all had ideas to bring to the table. After coming up with a concept of a pea pod, we all had ideas to share. We drew what we though the shape should be and what we thought of when it comes to sleeping. It should be dark, quiet, and comfortable. Fabrics, soft materials, and plain colors were materials I thought we should look for to make our shelter.

We all were hard workers and helped with no questions. I helped by finding materials, taking pictures, laying out the graphics, and putting the shelter together.

Drawing ideas in the sketchbook helped when we had questions about how the shelter would look and seeing the proportions. It was also easier to see other team members’ ideas on paper when they were explaining their ideas.

An important decision I made was that it would be made for two users. The size of our shelter was an appropriate choice. If it were two smaller people they would fit comfortably. A smaller person and a larger person would fit snug; while a larger person would have some room. The height of the shelter was appropriate because it doesn’t feel too big and open and it is not so small so the person feels uncomfortable.

My shelter was a great success because of how well my team worked together and we communicated well. We got the shelter made and the graphic put up on time with time to spare. I wasn’t stressed for a minute and knew we would have it done because of how hard we worked during the week. I think that the shelter turned out great because the shape sufficed and really mirrored our concept. The comfort was pleasant, the foam worked well and the extra padding added support.

The project has affected my way of thinking by challenging me to consider how a person who has lost a lot could build something for shelter. They can’t just go to the nearest hardware store and buy materials to build a shelter. They have to use found materials and really think about how they will use it. When I was making the shelter I was thinking a lot about how people without anything have really survived and can make a place for themselves.

I will remember this project by having our graphic on the wall above our desks. It would be nice if there was enough room to have our sleeping shelter at our desks for late nights and quick naps or relaxing but since there isn’t any room I will just have to cut a piece of the shelter to keep at my desk.

Neighborhood and Community

Neighborhood is defined as an area in which people share certain common facilities necessary to domestic life; while community is a network of social interaction and bonding, usually based on mutual interest.

It talked about in the chapter about the certain guidelines there was for the way one’s house had to look for this particular neighborhood such as what materials it is made of: brick, stone varieties, stucco, wood, vinyl siding. There are limits to roof colors as well as materials; and list of acceptable colors for the outside trim. For the exterior surroundings the landscaping should not become overgrown and it is to be well kept; as well as the houses being kept in good condition. The surfaces of the driveways and walks should be concrete, asphalt, bomanite, or brick payers. Pools must be totally in-ground. Fencing may only be used in the back yard and height should reach no more then six feet. No animals, livestock, or poultry shall be raised, bred, or kept on any lot except for dogs, cats, or other household pets.

I think that these guidelines for this neighborhood are good so that they will all look like a community that goes together. The look of all the houses using limited materials and colors so they tie in together. But I also feel that when a person can be creative and reflect them self in the look of their home is acceptable as well. I feel that when you see the neighborhoods with the cookie cutter houses that all look the same with the same façade and floor plan that they lack character. When the houses are built ten feet from each other to allow for more people in less space then it isn’t as pleasing either. When they are built so close it doesn’t allow for privacy.

Fostering Community

This is not a community environment.

A community is generally about a group of individuals who have the power to influence each other and their environment. Inhabitants' influential power is minimal when they are a few among 200 other tenants. People have more incentive to engage their community when all/most members share ownership of the community.
Complex spans nearly 60 acres (forrent.com) - does not relate well to the individual.
A community is also about some sort of permanence. For many, apartment living outside of large cities is generally reserved for temporary stays. Concern for the local community is minimal when life in the apartment complex is simply a temporary means to another place of residence or a more permanent place of residence.
Garage access to the apartments prevents neighborly interaction.
Yards maintained by the apartment staff prevent neighborly interaction as well as public identity within the community. One's yard is one's public facade.
The apartments have no character or identity beyond their controlled yards and brick facades.
Though there is a pool as well as a fitness center most people are too busy to engage in these activities. The social atmosphere of a fitness center is to workout and move rather then engage in conversation.
The complex advertises its proximity to city attractions: "Located just minutes from Centennial Olympic Park, Georgia Aquarium, CNN, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University, exquisite Atlantic Station, theaters and fine dining" (forrent.com).
The purpose of an apartment or any residence is to have a private space away from public interactions.

Dr. Follicles Barbershop

This is a community environment.

" 'young blokes' - men in their 20s, 30s and 40s - flock back to the barber's chairs they once wriggled in as kids" (The Age).
Barbershops are about familiar faces, and local people.
Magazines within the barbershop foster conversation about the current tabloids and political issues.
The barbershop is characterized as an unofficial meeting place, therefore a symbol of community (Rengel, 259).
The barbershop is tied into the neighborhood's identity, those who visit are part of that identity.
Low expense- a meeting place for people of many financial standings.
Close proximity's coupled with mirrors and chairs oriented towards each other foster communication; conversations flow freely with all parties within view.
Environment that fosters casual conversation rather than forced meetings.

Barbershops are often privately owned. Patrons have direct interaction with the owner(s) therefore a direct impact on how he/she handles business.
The barbershop is an acceptable context for people to socialize at all ages.
"A lot of guys don't feel comfortable in a hair salon with all that chrome and pretention" (The Age). This quote represents the natural and casual atmosphere of Dr. Follicles.
Music and a complimentary beer come with every haircut (The Age).
Conversation in a barbershop compliments the purpose of getting one's hair cut. "It has a specific use reinforcing and justifying its social function" (Specter, 17).
Socializing compliments an experience whereas socializing because one lives among 200 tenants is forced interaction. One does not need to advertise places for people to gather. "People gather naturally in places where the action is. The sense of liveliness is the essence of the successful urban space" (Specter, 14).

In doing this project and taking from the disaster that happened in Haiti, I think it has been a real eye opener for me. Living here with my family and being blessed with a safe, warm shelter of a house is something I take for granted. By doing this project and having to only find materials that we find and thinking about how we will make use out of it, is also something I hope I never have to worry about in a personal experience. I think the point of the project, or at least one, would be to think about the things we throw out are materials people around the world are having to build their shelters with such as cardboard, old wood, plastic bags, and old clothes or material. Also having to find something to hold it all together.

As a whole it is about creating an experience that will invite the user in and want to stay in a time of need.

A Shelter for Sleeping

After a long day of working I come back to the shelter to have my dinner and get ready to sleep for the next busy day. When I lay down in the shelter all my aches and pains are minimized. Laying in the shelter made of foam, cardboard, bubble wrap, and plastic is so comfy that it doesn’t take me long to fall asleep. Also, being secluded from all the noise helps so I can fall asleep and not get distracted. I hold my child close so she stays warm through the nighttime. Having her close by and knowing where she is helps me to relax and get a good nights rest.

I also come here during the day so that I can take a quick nap or just to relax after lunch to finish the day.

I am so thankful to have a place that my child and I can lay down to rest and stay warm at night.

The top one I drew in pencil and used it to trace the bottom one

Gradation thru Spheres

In my sculpting class we were assigned to use basic shapes and make an abstract piece.

I wanted to use the sphere shape and I cut them in half and got the semi-sphere.

This shows gradation thru the spheres going from big to small and also the semi-spheres.

The line of spheres creates a visual line that wraps around all three semi-spheres

to connect the three semi-spheres.

The first thing we did was made it in clay, after that we made the mold around it.

When we were putting the mold on the spheres kept falling of from the weight of the

plaster mold and we just stuck them back on, but it made me nervous how it would turn out.

Then the clay came out of the mold fairly easy, and then I just cleaned it up. Then we poured

the hydrocal into the mold. After it hardened I chipped away all the mold, but again the

spheres were a problem because they became unattached to the semi-spheres and I had to

superglue them back at the end. There was also so air bubbles that I had to patch.

Overall this was a fun project, difficult but for a first time it turned out good.

Next I plan to paint it when I get a chance.

For this perspective I chose to do it more precise and have straight lines.

I tried to show the light and shadow as best I could on the walls, floor,

and on the furniture. Instead of just putting scale figures into the perspective

Rendering Perspectives

For this assignment we were to pick a painting by Maud Gatewood and take

four colors from that painting and apply them to our room perspectives.

The perspective above is a style that is more lose with the lines and focuses more

on light and shadow. The shadowing that I did in this is more dark and sketchy.

This perspective is still loose but has a little more structure to how they are put

on the page. These colors are very bright and bold and I don't think they

worked as well as the above one.

This perspective has more tighter lines and the light and shadow is focused

on more than just darker or black spaces, I think I showed it well on the floor.

These colors are a better choice and I also think that the checkered tile floor

gives it a different feel then the other two that are solid.

For this project we were to choose an inspiring room. I chose the image above.

From that room we were to then create a new room based on the perspective from the inspiring room. We were giving guidelines for what to place in the room, such as table, 6 chairs, couch, chair, and coffee table. Also which wall the door was to be placed on and how many windows. We were to also place a skylight in the SW corner.

Then we were to draft the floor plan showing the space we created in the first perspective and to also add a study space to the other side including a desk, chair, shelving, and lighting. I wanted the study to be in a separate room from the living room and dining room so that you wouldn't have been distracted by others. The other half on the lower part of the plan is the kitchen. The french doors lead out to a patio.

Then we were to show the perspective of the other half of the room you designed in the floor plan.

Mercedes-Benz Museum

The name Mercedes-Benz gives people the perception of wealth, sleekness, speed and luxury. The Mercedes-Benz Museum gives people the perception of wealth, sleekness, speed and luxury also. Germany is the place where the first automobile was invented; therefore, it is an appropriate setting for the automobile museum. Award-winning architects from UN Studio designed this very unique building. The building was started in 2001 and completed and opened in 2006.

Sometimes, a museum is just about what the walls and insides hold. Not so with the Stuttgart, Germany Mercedes-Benz Museum. The museum structure itself is also about the clever architecture used in the design of the building where every detail was thought through allowing for display spaces and also a restaurant, office spaces and other uses. This very large, 16,500 square meter building has facades that are covered in aluminum and glass. It takes the shape of a three-leaf clover using three overlapping circles with the center removed to form a triangular atrium. This design compliments the cloverleaf of the nearby fast lanes of the highways B14 and B10. The shape of the building is also a reminder of the logo used for the Mercedes-Benz Company, a circle with a three-pointed star. The building is made up of only rounded forms and curves, having no right angles. Another unique feature is there aren’t any pillars used for support in the building.

When museum guests ride on the elevators, they are able to experience part of the museum by being shown an introduction to the museum.

In 2007, 860,000 people visited the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Admission is free for everyone. It would take about two hours to tour the nine levels of 160 cars and 1,500 exhibits.

I chose this building for a couple of reasons. First of all, I really enjoy cars and secondly, the design of this building is so unique on the inside and out, it is a clever way to exhibit many unique cars, limousines, sports cars and even buses. It would be a wonderful experience to visit Germany and drive to the Mercedes-Benz Museum one day.

Community

A social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage. The UN Studio is a community because they work together to design great buildings. They designed the Mercedes-Benz Museum and created something great!

Stewardship

A person who manages another's property or financial affairs; one who administers anything as the agent of another or others. When we designed a room with a kitchen and living room we had control of where things when in the space. Then we traded with another student to design the room for them the way we wanted to. We had the stewardship of the room when we were designing it for the other person because we were in control.

Authenticity

The quality of being authentic or of established authority for truth and correctness. The Crystal Palace, in London, was designed by Joseph Paxton. It was designed to be build around a tree so that it wouldnt be destroyed when built. It was designed with authenticity because it didn't harm nature.

Innovation

The act of innovating; introduction of new things or methods. In studio we were to design a sacred space for the grad students that was public and private, and showed celebration and meditation. In my design I made the public side more celebrating where the students can eat and talk to each other, and on the private side it was more meditative so that the students could go there without distractions and think by themselves.

The Crystal Palace

This unit was about finding modernism. In the early 1800s architects started working with glass and iron. The most known building that was built of glass and iron is the Crystal Palace, in London. It was designed by Joseph Paxton in 1851. Paxton designed the building to be built around the trees that were already there. Then America wanted one so they had a foe one built in New York in 1853.

Then in the later 1800s they added concrete to the glass and metal. In Chicago five buildings were built. The Marshall Field Warehouse by H.H. Richardson in 1885-1887. The Home Insurance Building by William Jenny in 1883-1885. The Monadnock Building by Burnham and Root in 1889-1891. The Reliance Building by Burnham and Root in 1883-1885. The Marshall Field & Co. by Daniel Burnham.

Then in the early 1900s, the race for height started and used concrete, steel, and glass.

Frank Lloyd Wright was a famous and great architect in the later 1800s, early 1900s. He designed using horizontal lines. He designed his house and studio in Oak Park, in 1889-1909. He designed lots of houses and churches. His Robie House, built in 1909,

Between Silence & Light

Craft

Craft is how well something is thought about and made. In our studio classes we are partly graded on our craft of our projects, like if the glue shows or how well we cut the paper. This weekend on our trip to Fallingwater I think that Frank Lloyd Wright designed a well-crafted house for the Kauffman family. He designed the furniture to fit in and around the house, and used the land to build. One particular craft he thought about that I remember well is the windows on the second and third floors in the corner, the steel frame disappears when the windows are opened to allow for a panoramic view looking outside. Another is how the cut out on the desk allows for the window/door to open.

Technique

Everyone has their own technique and a way of doing something that is easiest or relates better to them self. Also it is a way of doing something in a different way. The technique used on the doors in Monticello to look like wood was actually a foe finish on the doors. Also the technique used in Fallingwater is to create a since of openness from the many windows in the rooms. It also allows for more light to enter the rooms, and allows for more of a view.

Virtual

Virtual is the existence of something without actually being there. Most commonly heard of is seeing a virtual tour on a computer or television. I think also when you see a brochure and the pictures are so inviting and you want to be there.

Public & Private

We think about rooms and buildings being public and private by where they are located, how they are designed, and what they are used for. At Monticello, the family room located in the center of the house is more private, it is where they could entertain guests and was big enough for space. The doors that we saw first were two glass doors, but since it is a family room to allow it to be more private there were a set of wooden doors that allowed the family to close in front of the glass doors.

Language

Is the communication you have between two or more people. To design Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright needed to communicate well with the Kauffman family so that they were able to get what they wanted. We noticed that everything was built to a smaller scale and that there were lots of horizontal lines. The first chairs that Wright designed for the dinning room seating, the Kauffman’s thought that it was too formal so Wright designed another set of chairs that they liked better.

Learning to Render Rooms

The above photo is the first room perspective I did. I was to design a one room space with a kitchen, dining room, and living room. I chose whatever I wanted to put in the space. Then when we rendered the space we were to divide the room in four and use a different media and different types of paper for each section. On the first section (L-R) I used marker on vellum. I didn't think this worked well because it was hard to control, hard to hide strokes, and show shadow. On the second one I used colored pencil on drawing paper. I felt that this was a good technique, but over larger areas it was hard to color evenly. The third one I used marker on marker paper. This was very fun to play with to learn to use and I felt like I did really well showing light and shadows. The fourth one is watercolor on watercolor paper. I am still learning to use watercolor, so it was kind of difficult to show light and shadow, but practice makes perfect.

This assignment was called trading spaces. When it was first new to HGTV I loved this show and never missed an episode. We were to trade rooms with another students room and take inspiration from theirs and change the room to best suit us. We could change color, rearrange furniture, or totally change everything. I used Kristina Ragan's room to do mine. I changed the windows in the dining area, moved the dining area, raised the floor in the kitchen, and added more seating to the living room. I took green from here room before and then added more color to the room. I love color, especially orange and anything bright.

Rotation

It is the act or movement of turning around the center of an axis. When something is positioned one way and then rotated it will look different or you would be looking at a completely side.

Movement

“Movement is meant to express, the rise and fall, the advance and recess, with other diversity of form, in different parts of a building, so as to add greatly to the picturesque of the composition.” (Blakemore, 306) Over time there have been many different movements and each one has its own style and sometimes movements will come back for a little while. Especially with clothing styles an older woman will see a younger girls clothes and say I wore those when I was younger. Same as with design the older styles of furniture will come back in style.

Reflection

When I think about a reflection I first think of seeing myself in a mirror. Sometimes you can see your reflection in a dark window or water. You often see the reflection of trees and nature in water of images with a lake or river. Also a reflection can be your thoughts about something you have observed or heard.

It is the direct place where something comes from such as the information you obtain from a book or person. I often look on the Internet to get a source for something. When I think of source I think about a light source and the different types of lighting. A light source can be from a window when it is daytime or the use of artificial lights from a light bulb.

Illumination

It is to make an object glow or to highlight the important areas by using lights. It can be with natural or artificial such as candles or lamps. We have learned a lot this week about the importance of light. We were to build an object based on how it reflected light. Also when we rendered our room space we looked at where the light would come from and where it would be darkest and lightest with shadows.

Ritual Shape Buildings and Building Shape Rituals

In the churches circles are a very sacred form and symbol because it is the connector from earth and heaven. In the Church of the Nativity around the center of the cross is a circle. With it being on the alter, the circle allows the focus point to be the cross. There are also circles found in the designs of Santa Constanza and Hagia Sophia. Also being developed from a circle pattern is a dome. It allows light to come into churches. In the church of the Holy Sepulchre a dome is the sacred burial spot, but still has function. The courtyard separates the dome and the basilica where the people gather in one area so they can hear. After a while architects and designers started to test the boundaries and break rules of the normal rituals and go outside the box.

The Duomo, in Florence, Italy, shows the rebirth of antiquity, individualism, and humanism. It rediscovers the natural world and is a reglorification of the state as a work of art. The Venezia is known as the city of floating stone, where you can find Santa Maria della Salute, while there is still a dome on this church it is a pilgrimage church inside a city. The Doge’s Palace, in Venice, is designed to resemble lace. Glass and lace were important materials in Italy. Filippo Calendario’s design did a good job in doing so. Piazza San Marco is the principal square of Venice. It is the only urban space called a piazza in Venice.

[Re]visions

A new model of something. In design we do a lot of planning and thinking and it can sometimes be to complex and so we revise it and turn it into something better. Last week we went on a nature hunt and found inspiration from things in nature. We drew thumbnails of the patterns we saw from the things we found in nature. And this week we have designed a model to reflect what patterns we found in nature and that also ties into a celebration story from our life. It is also suppose to work with light and shadow, so if one model doesn't work we revise it to make it work.

Audience

When designing something a key factor is to think about how the audience will react to it. The designer wants the audience to be wowed and amazed by the design. At the DATS program we went to at High Point University, Alexander Julian was one of the speakers. He talked about when he was called and asked to design the new UNC basketball jerseys. He had a design in mind, but wasn't sure how the basketball players would feel about it. He thought carefully about his audience and how he would get the players to like it and so he called Michael Jordan and asked if he would mind coming with him to show the design. He did, and the players thought well if Michael Jordan likes it we'll wear it.

Character

The most common definition for character is the character in a story. Another is, how the person acts would be his character or characteristics. And in design an architect makes his building more interesting and delightful by the character it shows. For my History and Theory of Design class we were to pick a building in the 20Th century that we will be working with through out the whole semester. I chose the Mercedes-Benz Museum because of the character is has. It is a modern design, designed to take the shape of a three leaf clover.

Transition

A change or movement from one place or thing to another. Transition takes place a lot in design. Whether its the change from one level to another or to a completely different idea. I think of transition having a lot to do with a pathway or road to lead you to where your suppose to go, but I think the transition is noticeable. Like in a house when you walk from a living room to the kitchen the transition you made is from couches and a television to a refrigerator, sink, and cabinets.

Datum

A line or point used as a reference to measure. When I think of a datum line I think it should be around eye level when things are hung so that it's easier to see. When we were planning and placing images on our presentation boards about our buildings we used a datum line, making sure everything lined up and were evenly spaced so that you wouldn't be distracted.

To summarize this week, I feel like as a designer you should think about the audience and giving you design character and if something doesn't work you should revise it. The transition you make from one place to another should be thought about and when hanging things up use a datum line.

The Mercedes-Benz Museum is located in Stuttgart-Unterturkheim, Germany. UN Studio was very creative in the design process, and it was completed and opened in 2006. This steel structure with modern glass houses around 100 cars. It is a spiral ramp showcase, with a tour starting at the earliest models to end with the newest. The building is shaped with three rounded corners, in the shape to mimic a three leaf cover.

Periphery

It is the external boundaries of a surface. With the portal project we did we had to work with the boundaries of other objects on the wall and by not going into the boundaries of other portals.

Portfolio

A portfolio is a collection of all the work we do in a well-organized carrying case. In is a good way of storing work that you will need later on. If you are going to an interview for a job, it allows the employer to see the employee’s ability to complete certain tasks. It should also be in order and have things labeled.

Process

This is a continual action of work that allows progression to happen in a forward motion. The process of something is a well-organized plan that one goes through to get to a certain point or place. The process we did starting with reading a fairy tale then ending at building a portal took careful planning and thinking. The different projects we made and designed in between were part of the process of getting to how the design our portals.

Perspective

It is the angle in which you view an object and the depth of an object. Last semester we worked with perspective a lot and learning to see things with depth. We drew four perspective drawings. I did an interior one point, an exterior one point, an exterior two point and a one point looking above something.

Professional

For something to look professional it needs to be well crafted and well presented. When mounting images on a board there shouldn’t be any awkward spaces and the proximity of images should be thought out carefully. If words are needed on a board then the architectural lettering should be very neat and readable. Also, using guidelines will help. This week our groups for the building projects were to put all our images on a board. My group carefully thought about the background color, the size of each image, and the placement of the images.
